From Adopt-a-Drain MN:
Minneapolis Adopt-a-Drain Volunteers: Your safety matters. Thank you for helping protect our lakes and rivers by keeping storm drains clear! These simple tips can help you stay safe while cleaning your drain (download a pdf of these tips):
Before you head out
Wear gloves (rubber, latex, or work gloves)
Wear closed-toe shoes
Bring a tool (broom, rake, or shovel) so you don't need to touch debris directly
Avoid cleaning drains if you have open cuts on your hands
While Cleaning Your Drain
Use tools to move leaves, trash, or sediment
Do not touch unknown substances with bare hands
Avoid stirring up dust or residue
If debris looks or smells unusual, stop and step away
Examples of things to avoid touching:
Powdery residue
Strong chemical odors
Oily, sticky, or discolored material
After You're Done
Wash your hands with soap and water
Clean tools with water
Wash work clothes before wearing them again
When Not to Clean Your Drain
Please do not clean your drain if you notice:
Strong or irritating smells
Visible residue you don't recognize
Recent chemical activity nearby
Instead, report the location to the City so crews can check it safely.
How to Report a Concern
If you notice something unusual:
Submit a service request through the City's 311 system using the City app, or call 311 or 612-673-3000.
Include the location and a brief description of what you saw or smelled
Photos are helpful, but only take them if it's safe to do so
City staff will follow up as needed.
Thank You!
